The
setting for "Glade Creek Mill" has all the beauty,
nostalgia and atmosphere of yesteryear. It has,
however, a relatively new story to tell. Constructed
in Babcock State Park in central West Virginia
in 1976, it is a re-creation of a mill that once
stood nearby.
Glade Creek mill contains portions of other mills
once located throughout the area…Stoney Creek,
Spring Run, and Roaring Creek.Visitors enjoy watching
the grinding of cornmeal and buckwheat flour in
an exquisitely picturesque setting. Over 500 mills
served the mountainous regions of West Virginia
in the early 1900s. Today's reconstruction stands
as a testament to those mills of the past and
the people they served.
I
was particularly attracted to the boulder-strewn
creek downstream from the mill. Following a rather
energetic hike among these rocks, a compositional
decision was made. The viewer would "enter" the
painting well below the mill, but would be drawn
to the wheel knowing it was water that gives it
life.
Autumn
is tremendous in the hills of West Virginia.I
hope you agree!
